AASLH Committees are made up of those working or volunteering in the history field that have an expertise and passion for the committee’s area of responsibility.

Some committees provide resources to the field, such as trainings and publications. Others advise AASLH to assist with the operation and programs of the association.

  • Awards: Evaluate and select recipients of the AASLH Leadership In History Awards. Some members of this committee also serve as state and regional representatives who provide feedback on nominations before they are submitted.
  • Climate and Sustainability: Support and guide the field as it incorporates environmental sustainability and climate work into historic preservation.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: This committee helps implement DEAI into the operations of AASLH and sponsors and coordinates activities and educational programs for the field.
  • Editorial Advisory Board: Review proposals for the AASLH Book Series and provide guidance to authors as they research and write their books.
  • Educators and Interpreters: History organizations are places of informal learning. Help set the agenda for and create best practices for those who create educational programs.
  • Gender Discrimination and Sexual Harassment: Advise staff and Council on developing resources on these important topics for the field to help make our workplaces safer.
  • Historic House Museums: Provide advice and direction for the development of programs and services that reflect current issues and thinking for this unique type of museum.
  • Investment: Review and recommend policies and strategies for investment of the association’s endowment and other funds.
  • Membership: This new committee will work to increase AASLH’s membership base. Join one of two subcommittees—one focused on Institutional members and the other consisting of and focusing on increasing membership among those age 40 and younger.
  • Military History: Develop programs and services that benefit history institutions with a military focus as well as museums and historic sites with military items in their collections.
  • Nomenclature: This committee classifies man-made objects in a standard cataloging tool used by thousands of museums and historical organizations.
  • Small Museums: Assist America’s small museums in their endeavors, helping to make them stronger and more responsive to their communities.
  • Standards and Ethics: Review and recommend standards and related guidelines for the operation of and ethical considerations associated with historical organizations and the association.
  • Women’s History: Encourage thoughtful scholarship, curriculum, interpretive content, public and educational programs, and share best practices and strategies for including women’s history in sites and locations of all sizes.

These committees have one or more openings. All self-nominations will be taken into consideration by the President and CEO. Recommendations are presented to the Chair of AASLH’s Council, who makes all committee appointments.
