The American Association for State and Local History introduces new features to the Annual Conference every year to improve the experience of those who attend. Here’s what’s new at the 2023 Annual Conference, which will be held in Boise, Idaho on September 6-9.
Wednesday Evening Event and Dinner Included with Registration*
The Wednesday night evening event at the Old Idaho State Penitentiary is included in your registration! This event includes a buffet-style meal and one free drink ticket.
Guided tours and history presentations will be offered throughout the evening, and the tours will include glimpses into areas typically closed to the public. All exhibits will be open for the evening, and the Idaho Prison Arts Collective will provide unique presentations of stories from the people who have lived and worked in Idaho’s correctional institutions. You’ll also see a preview of the site’s upcoming interpretive reimagining. A DJ will provide music and the museum store is providing a 20% discount on all purchases.
Friday Lunch Included with Registration*
Our Meeting of the Membership and Leadership in History Awards presentation on Friday from noon – 1:30 p.m. will include lunch and is included in your meeting registration. Join us as we recognize the outstanding projects and people that have advanced excellence in public history.
*While these events are included with registration, you must pre-register so we can arrange the catering. Be sure to select these events when completing your registration so we are properly prepared.
Learning Circles
After a successful pilot at last year’s conference, Learning Circles are a new program this year. Learning Circles convene cohorts of six peers several times throughout the conference, each group facilitated by a seasoned history professional. The group will meet on Thursday morning to create individual learning plans for the conference. They will meet on Thursday afternoon, Friday lunch, and Saturday morning to share observations, discuss new ideas or lessons learned in sessions, and develop a map on how to act upon the ideas learned during the conference when they return home.
You can register to participate in a Learning Circle as you register for the conference. There is no additional cost. Space is limited to eight groups, so don’t wait if you are interested.
Filmapalooza!
Throughout the conference, there will be a screening room designated in the Boise Centre where films who have won an AASLH Leadership in History Award will be shown. There is also an opportunity for other organizations to submit their films for consideration. A list of films and times will be released closer to the conference. If you have a film or short documentary you think should be included, contact Aja Bain at [email protected].
Early bird registration discounts for the conference are available through July 28. Members receive the best discounts!
