The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is excited to announce a significant change for the History Leadership Institute (HLI), the premier professional development program for mid-career professionals at history organizations.

Beginning in 2025, HLI will be hosted by the Minnesota Historical Society in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After two decades at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, Indiana, this relocation marks an exciting new chapter in the history of HLI, which has empowered history professionals for over six decades to lead with purpose, relevance, and impact.

The History Leadership Institute, established in 1959, helps history professionals at all management levels to develop the skills, knowledge, and connections necessary to lead both history institutions and the future of the public history field. Each year, through an intensive two-week seminar as well as a series of virtual gatherings, a diverse cohort of 20 HLI Fellows engage deeply with the most pressing national and global issues facing history organizations, including facilitating change, fostering effective teams, engaging with diverse audiences, and more.

“As a graduate of HLI, I know that it is a transformative experience for those dedicated to advancing history’s role in society,” said John R. Dichtl, AASLH President and CEO. “This move to Minnesota allows us to build upon the strengths of one of the country’s most innovative state historical societies to enhance the training for HLI Fellows.”

“What an honor it is for the Minnesota Historical Society to serve as the next host for the History Leadership Institute!” said Kent Whitworth, Director and CEO of the Minnesota Historical Society. “We are excited to partner with AASLH and to learn from and encourage our colleagues from around the country.”

HLI Director Andrea Jones said, “As I work to generate excitement and bring new change-makers to the program, I’m genuinely excited about our move to Minneapolis. I couldn’t ask for more fertile grounds for the kinds of conversations I like to have with the next generation of history leaders.”

The History Leadership Institute offers an immersive curriculum of workshops, discussions, activities, and site visits led by renowned experts from across the country. Fellows are encouraged to explore dynamic solutions for addressing the history field’s evolving challenges, positioning HLI as a unique forum for pioneering approaches and transformative thinking. The program continues to expand its impact by evolving alongside the needs of the field and the communities it serves.

This relocation to the Minnesota Historical Society reinforces AASLH’s commitment to providing HLI Fellows with an environment that fosters innovation and collaboration. The Minnesota Historical Society’s deep roots in history, commitment to inclusivity, and reputation as a leader in the field make it the ideal partner for HLI’s next chapter.

The 2025 History Leadership Institute seminar will take place June 16 to June 27, 2025. Applications to join the 2025 cohort of Fellows are open now and the deadline to apply is January 15, 2025.
