Every year, AASLH partners with Rowman & Littlefield Press to publish practical and relevant books for history professionals. These publications cover a wide range of subjects, from museum leadership to interpreting difficult subjects to reflections on the practice of public history. AASLH members always get 20% off the AASLH Series at Rowman & Littlefield.
The Editorial Board for AASLH’s book series with Rowman & Littlefield Press actively welcomes new book proposals. If you have something to share with your professional colleagues, we’d like to hear from you!
What does writing a book for our series entail?
Most of our books are approximately 75,000 words (250 double-spaced pages) in length. Most of our authors take 10 to 12 months after contract issuance to write their manuscript.
We are particularly interested in books on:
- Technology for management, for enhancing visitor experiences, for websites/virtual collections, in museums and historic houses
- Public History especially books that can be used as textbooks
- Fundraising as it pertains to history organizations
- Programming Ideas and Strategies that are easily replicated
- Assessment and Evaluationmeasures and techniques of all kinds
- Management of History Organizations, including issues of sustainability, mergers, and institutional life cycles
- Collections/Archives preservation and conservation, techniques, collecting (and deaccession) strategies
In addition, we are always seeking proposals for our Interpreting History series.
Thus far we published books on interpreting African American History, Prohibition, LGBT, Slavery, American Indians, Food, and Military History. We have quite a few more in the pipeline including books on interpreting Latino history, Women’s history, and Anniversaries and Milestones.
Books in this series are for local history organizations to turn to when thinking of ways to better use their own collections/local stories while relating to larger themes in history. Here are some topics we are seeking proposals for:
- Reconstruction
- Vietnam Era
- Music
- World War I
- World War II
- Beer
- Crime and Punishment
- The Civil Rights Movement
- Popular Culture
