AASLH is excited to announce the History Leadership Institute Class of 2020. Each summer, history professionals from institutions large and small across the United States convene for intensive discussion about the critical issues and challenges facing our field. These emerging leaders in the field were selected from a highly qualified and competitive pool of applicants, among the largest such pools since the program moved to Indianapolis in 2004. We are excited to welcome such a dynamic class at this exciting time for the program.
2020 marks the first time HLI will be offered in its new “2+2” format: two weeks of online learning, followed by a two-week, in-person seminar at Indiana Historical Society. It is also the first time the program will be offered in June, opening up new opportunities for partnership with local universities and allowing participants to view nearby institutions like Conner Prairie during their peak operating season.
Among other highlights of this year’s program will be sessions on relevance, decolonization, responding to public tragedies, intentional impact, and many other field-wide challenges. This year’s program will also include a new workshop with the nationally-renowned FrameWorks Institute, offering early training and insight into its ongoing research with AASLH into effective history communication.
AASLH’s History Leadership Institute is supported and guided by field-leading organizations from around the country: Conner Prairie, History Nebraska, Indiana Historical Society, Minnesota Historical Society, Missouri Historical Society, and the National Association for Interpretation. Applications for the HLI Class of 2021 will open this fall.
